About The Bioenergy Atlas

The BioEnergy Atlas for South Africa, funded by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and coordinated by the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON), a subsidiary of the National Research Foundation (NRF), is a public resource to support the development of bioenergy in South Africa.

The Atlas aims to provide industry partners, investors in independent power production (IPP) and planners in local and national government departments with improved data, tools, and scenarios to facilitate decision-making around bioenergy implementation.

The data and tools included in the Atlas form part of a decision support system for the emissions, water, energy and job creation nexus. Also, utilising the latest available information to assist with the integration of bioenergy sources with other energy sources into South Africa’s energy economy, whilst assisting South Africa with meeting international climate objectives.
